It amuses me when people preface something by saying "I'm going to hell for this but..." It's like when people start with "I probably shouldn't say this"... If you start with those then maybe you shouldn't say anything lol. When someone uses the former I have to think why in the world would someone want to say or do something even jokingly worthy of them going to hell. Of course I highly doubt when it's used in this joking manner that it is something that will buy them a direct ticket into the depths, but it is usually something in bad taste. If you can preface with that sentence then it's probably something you shouldn't say or do.
"But AE, not everyone believes in hell."
Well, if you believe hell is ficticious why mention it at all? And if you do believe in hell why joke about a place of eternal suffering?
Maybe I'm just thinking too far into this lol.

It's an expression.
Yeah you're right, it doesn't make much sense when you actually think about it. But then again most old saying don't nowadays...
I probably shouldn't say this but .... :) hi
Well, if you take it literally you have a point, however if you regard it purely as a stylistic twist, and a sort of a lefthanded way to pay extra attention, because I'm about to tell you something I shouldn't have told you, then it can be quite effective in making you pay attention without rubbing your nose in it... the secret is in the delivery.
This must be on your list of "things I can't stand that people say" :)
I've been doing that ever since Michael Jackson died. I've just accepted my fate.
i think it's the overuse of some phrases that gets us thinking. heh
I do think it is a phrase that has just been overused and has no meaning. I hated hearing it when I was at my ministerial training school because we all knew what "sent" a person to hell. When I hear it, it sort of is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I've always wondered those things myself. Good points!
I think it's one of those expressions you never notice until you think about it in depth and then you're like....well that's stupid. Lol.
But I don't think it'll ever stop being used =]
Yea, I wonder why an atheist would use words like God and Jesus and Hell??? But they do.
maybe.
I agree, I don't think hell is something people should joke about at all.
