(Read this, even if you don't play World of Warcraft, there is a point, I promise
) In World of Warcraft there are two opposing forces, The Horde and The Alliance. I am Horde and therefore live in opposition to the Alliance. When I come across them, even on Xanga or Hardestlevel I easily pass them off as "alliance scum." Naturally opposing forces. There can be no love between the two. Horde and Alliance literally do not speak the same language. When I type in English it reaches an Alliance member's screen as gibberish. We could never get along, and usually if we cross paths there is either a fight, or a rude gesture exchanged. On the very rare occasions when an Alliance member helps someone of the Horde, or vice versa, it is seen as an ultimate rare occasion, and only happens if both parties benefit from it.
Two opposing sides, bred to disagree and fight forever more for the power of the world. Isn't that like life? Blacks vs Whites, Poor vs. Rich, Theists vs. Atheists, Democrats vs. Republicans, Gay vs. Straight?
WoW shouldn't mirror life, because we are human beings not game characters programmed to hate, but that is how some people chose to behave. We shouldn't write someone off as "scum" because they are part of a different group than we are because no where written in our DNA does it say we have to hate those different from us.
There can be love, and decent exchange because we aren't FORCED to speak different languages, we just are too lazy to take the time and understand each other.
I didn't say agree, I said understand.
We don't have to have negative/rude exchanges every time we cross paths. Its not mandatory, you can see a person as a person, not just as their affiliation.
It doesn't have to be rare for those with different viewpoints to get along, its a choice being made on both sides. No two people just "can never get along." We're not talking about getting married, just being able to be civil, its possible, if you want it to be.

Too true =)
absoutely. well put
Agreed. Love is a choice; so is hate. REC'ED.
But that's the problem--some people actually LIKE hating another group, and don't want to change.
Yes, and, to add to that, the ONLY way to overcome hatred, is to take responsibility for having chosen it ourselves by wanting to be different, instead of Children of One Father. (Believe it or not, I will NEVER forget going to kindergarten in the " Garden of Peace Street" in Rotterdam, and the teacher taught us a circle dance, with us all holding hands singing a Dutch song: "Children of One Father, give each other a hand." etc. She was one of the most loving people I ever met, and not only that, I knew that she was dying of cancer at the time. She remained an example all of my life.
Hey, you wrote some worthy posts lately! I, as admin of Catpooish, ask you if I could feature this on there?
Back to the topic, I agree with you on this. Hate is a choice to make. I believe no one can fiercely hate someone with passion since the beginning of the time. Hate is choice but also something we pass by generation too. It's like a stereotype of some kind because different group will hate the different thing.
I happen to help Horde out all the time, Im just sweet like that. =) Of course I have been knifed in the back a few times but ehh what can you do.. lol
I agree with this post. Cant we all just get along?? =)
True.
What is even sadder is some people are taught to hate. They are raised to hate and that is all they know. They do not form their own opinions or anything. It is in their environment. Those who hate others really deep down hate themselves in my opinion.
@Darn_it_danube - Very true, thats the most serious of cases. When hate brings someone joy is a sad thing.
But really, can't we all just get along right?! lol
@RogierFvV - very true.
@starrynite45 - Sure, you can certainly post this on Catpooish, thank you for the offer. RYC: very true, there is hate passed down through generations, but each generation has the choice on whether to continue it or not.
@tembleque91 - I'm a rogue, I stab alliance in the back all the time lol
@SerenaDante - You and Matt were part of my inspiration for this
@ccbg420 - Yea, it is unfortunate when hate is taught like that.
dislikes may be natural, but hate is taught, i think. AND it's a choice. a bad one, always.
except in revenge action movies.
@TheBigShowAtUD - yes, this is very important, you don't have to like everybody in order not to hate them. This is a very important difference. There is such a thing as preferences, and you'll get along better with some than others, and all of that is OK.
oh man...you just gave me ideas on what to discuss with my students in the class i'm mentoring :]
you're the best.
im pretty sure paris hilton is a horde... did you see that video of her on the intarnets?
Nice WoW reference (80 Blood Elf Mage here ^^)
Maybe to have the world become united we might need a common enemy. Maybe this is the purpose of the Lich King in WoW (joke)? I dont know if a common enemy would be enough to make me team up with another enemy though, at least not in wow with the new bg coming lolOh and back to the main point of your post, I think what ultimately sets people against each other is not only the differences but also greed. I dont know if I'll be able to explain this clearly, but I think that in the world there were always be several different groups of people with differences and each will always strive for their own progression, ultimately, when progression comes at the cost of war/life/resources, people will always decide that the other different groups of people are the best choice for these sacrifices rather than not progressing. But then again that is kind of a pessimistic way of looking at humans but it could also possibly be reality.
ps....kinda of like Wintergrasp, we all want it, and somebodies got to have it, so it might as well be us Horde
@elelkewljay - cool! Glad I could help

@Nine_Star_Lotus - I see what you are saying, I get it
@anth0nyc - I have not lol
For the Horde!
@SilentSeekr - I knew I liked you for a reason
Totally agreed! Couldn't have said it better myself.
They CHOSE to be an alliance member! How disgusting!
Lol, I'm kidding obviously.
This is so true. And it just reminds me that mostly everything in life is a choice, and if something natural happens, it's a choice to how we respond. And I think it somehow, in one way or another, comes down to selfishness as well. We always want to be right. We always want to defeat the other side, the other person, the other group. We always want to be the best, when it's not about being the best (and often cases there is no capability to be so [ethnicities, etc.] which makes it sort contradictory to fight over). Our goals, in our society have shifted immensely. Back in the day neighbors were more neighborly. People were kinder. Surely there are plenty of kind folks in the world, and surely there has been war since the world was in existence, but it has transitions from "help your neighbor, because we're all in the same boat (whether it be economic depression, drought, storms, etc.)" to me, me, me. I want to be the best, have the most money, and be the best person out of everyone and yadayada, mostly spurred from individual goals and achievements and materialism which persuades results in judgement.
Sorry, this is sort of a rant but it made me think. I have hope that there are (genuine) kind people and these people certainly outweight negativities.
Thanks for your thoughts!
P.S -- I know OF WoW, but not really about it. I hear its addicting?
@MangoWOW - lol, scum I tell you, they are scum
@awholenewbeginning - I totally agree!! Everything has a competitive "I have to win" "I have to be right" spirit, that goes down to even personal relationships and that mentality doesn't help things. Regarding WoW, it is HIGHLY addictive.
I hate the horde.
And you spelled the wrong 'bread'
